What is Mini Gastric Bypass (Single Anastomosis Gastric Bypass)?

Mini gastric bypass, also known as single anastomosis gastric bypass, is a highly effective surgery that combines some effects of both the sleeve gastrectomy and the standard gastric bypass. A tube is created at the upper part of the stomach, which is then connected to the lower part of the small intestine. Mini gastric bypass can be performed as a primary obesity surgery or as a revision surgery for patients who have previously undergone surgery but have not achieved successful results or sufficient weight loss.

How Does Mini Gastric Bypass Lead to Weight Loss?

  • Reduces the sensation of hunger.
  • Promotes early satiety, leading to smaller portion sizes.
  • Reduces calorie intake as a result of bypassing a 150-200 cm segment of the small intestine, which decreases the amount of absorbed food.
  • Alters intestinal hormone signals with the new food pathway, improving obesity-related conditions and risks, such as type 2 diabetes.

How is the Surgery Performed?

The surgery is performed laparoscopically (minimally invasive) under general anesthesia, using five small incisions ranging from 5 to 12 mm where surgical instruments are inserted. A narrow, 50 cc tube is created in the upper section of the stomach, and the connection between this part and the rest of the stomach is cut. The tube is then attached to the first part of the small intestine, known as the jejunum. The remainder of the stomach and the initial segment of the small intestine are not removed, but they do not contribute to food absorption. The operation typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.
